The Saints Are Coming

Leave it to U2 and Green Day to resurrect a 1978 punk anthem by the the scottish band the Skids. The two bands performed the song tonight pre-game on Monday Night Football to commemorate the reopening of the SuperDome in New Orleans. Proceeds will go to Music Rising, the hurricane charity initiative launched by U2’s The Edge and others. The Skid’s Stuart Adamson, who died in 2001, went on to become the leader of Big Country.

  1. awww i love greenday !

  2. Pure Genius By both U2 and Green Day, taking the pure raw energy of the punk age, to how how revilent this song is today.

  3. I cannot find the skid on itunes!!!

  4. I’ve downloaded this song and it is incredible. Being from the area (I move away before Katrina) and being a huge Saints fan. It was such an awesome night to come back to the dome. I was in the dome when they recorded the song. It speaks out to so many people in Louisiana and others(the other bush that didn’t help us i.e. President Bush). There are a few words from the song I can’t understand and was hoping to find the lyrics.

  5. Here are the full lyrics The Saints Are Coming” by the Skids and as covered by U2 and Green Day at the SuperDome.

  6. I am from Spain and I’m doing a whork about this song and I don’t know what says Bono in the song (he says one think that is not of the lyrics). Any one can say me what does he say?
    …thanks….

  7. Okay there are three versions i know of the song that is covered by them.

    1. The actual LIVE version
    2. One they made where they added the crowd’s cheering into it
    3. The studio version

The studio version does NOT have the following lyrics in it. And these lyrics are specificly from the second version i listed.

    Lyrics:
    New verse/(birth), to the reverse
    New Orleans

Living like birds in magnolia trees
A child on a rooftop, a mother on her knees
Her sign reads, please, I am an American

  8. man i love the saint and it good to see support thanks

  9. awwwww!!!!!!hey green day are awesome…….Billie Joe is the best………don’t u think the song with u2 is perfect???especially Billie’s voice make it much better………..he is a God!oh my God such beauty……anyway.

  10. I love this song!, but it takes away from Green Day being an individual and U2 being their seperate thing. I keep realizing that from American Idiot, Green Day is loosing their touch for original punk music, now its “fun rock” to everyone. My favorite songs are from Dookie and Warning. They are so wierd and original. I’m just putting that together and I agree that Billie Joe sounds so sweet in the beginning!

  11. I absolutely love this song! How could anyone hate it? Billie Joe and Bono sound great together and the guitars are amazing! And the Drums are fantastic too. I hope they do more music but also thier own songs! Its so good to hear Green Day back again!

  13. Well, Lois, The Skids formed in ’77. Do you honestly think they’re going to be on iTunes…

  14. I love The Skids. This song is pure genius.

  15. The Saints Are Coming – U2 & Green Day

    Genre/Lang. : Pop/Rock

There is a house in New Orleans, They call the Super Dome,
It’s been the ruin of many a poor boy, and God, I know i’m one.

    Verse 1
I cried to my daddy on the telephone,
    how long now?
Until the clouds unroll and you come down,
    the line went.
But the shadows still remain since your descent,
    your descent.

    Verse 2
I cried to my daddy on the telephone,
    how long now?
Until the clouds unroll and you come home,
    the line went.
But the shadows still remain since your descent,
    your descent.

    Chorus 1
The saints are coming, the saints are coming.
I say no matter how I try, I realise there’s no reply.
The saints are coming, the saints are coming.
I say no matter how I try, I realise there’s no reply.

    Verse 3
A drowning sorrow floods the deepest grief,
    how long now?
Until the weather change condemns belief,
    how long now?
When the night watchman lets in the thief
    Whats wrong now?

    Chorus 2
The saints are coming, the saints are coming
I say no matter how I try, I realise there’s no reply.
The saints are coming, the saints are coming
I say no matter how I try, I realise there’s no reply.
I say no matter how I try, I realise there’s no reply.
I say no matter how I try, I realise there’s no reply.

  16. green day is like been sent from heaven

  17. i have been a big fan of green day with this song they’ve become my idols for ever this song not only is a beautiful piece of art but also is an condolece of sort to the people who’ve died due to the hurricane katrina.

  18. candy, they have Queen on iTunes, it’s entirely possible that the Skids are there too.

  19. i just wanted to say that the lyric above is not correct… it should be
“But the shadows still remain since your descent,
    YOU’RE DECENT…”

  20. I noticed the chant ‘lo-cha-hey’ and immediately remembered loka-hey, which is Lakota Sioux meaning “Today is a good day to die”

  21. it realy make a difference…

  22. CRITICAL OF MORONS

CAN YOU CHILDREN PLEASE LEARN TO WRITE/SPEAK ENGLISH. NONE OF YOU CAN SPELL OR PUT A SENTENCE TOGETHER THAT MAKES SENSE.

AS FAR AS THE SKIDS BEING ON ITUNES. Most of you (ie: THE NEW GENERATION), don’t care anything about the music from previous generations. SO WHY WOULD iTUNES HAVE AN OBSCURE PUNK BAND FROM SCOTLAND? BTW VIRGINIE (you fool), Candee is correct in her thinking. And QUEEN is NOT an obscure punk band from Scotland – They are in the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame. That is why iTunes has Queen.

To the rest of you mindless worms: Why do you think Green Day is so good? They didn’t just start playing one day – THEY WERE INFLUENCED BY OTHERS! And you can even tell on some of their songs, that U2 is one of their influences. Broaden your minds oh ye of little ……… It’s aggravating.

  23. Ha Ha!!!!

Your feckin brand new so you are Critical!!!! T’is true though, U2 and Green Day were punk and leftfield before they were super and putting the boot into Dubya.

Everyone who’s anyone steals from his peers, it’s the greatest form of flattery. Richard Jobson who co-wrote the song with the dearly departed Stuart Adamson was humbled that this legendary to few song was being re-invented and given a wider audience for such a pure cause. Check out “into the valley” by the skids and you’ll see exactly where U2 and Green Day came from.

  24. since when where u2 a punk band?
they started out as a folk band, and they still think of themselves as the ‘largest folk band in the world’

and bobchin is right about loka-hey, and yes it does make a difference because it delves further into the meaning of the song

  25. yeah bobfinn – i saw that…. eventually

  26. yes. peoples should chang their owne country by thier owne troops.

  27. i like you too much green day and u2 .

  28. Tsoukinator, perhaps you should do more research:

U2 started in the late 70’s
    They only knew 3 chords
    edge could not play guitar
    bono could not sing
clayton could not play bass but mullen could drum!
    they had energy
their words were political, religious and anti establishment

how else do you define PUNK?

  29. I used to love U2, but these guys are liberal propaganda douchebags for trying to act like they know ‘the real story.’ I am referring to the bullshit video.

  30. this song is sex!

  31. two grestest bands in the world together in one awesome song
    best thing that ever happened
    AMAZING

  32. two grestest bands in the world together in one awesome song
    best thing that ever happened
    AMAZING yeah

  33. Green Day and U2’s coverage of Saint’s was awesome and for a really good cause. I also realized that in the movie Water Boy, they play the first part of Saint’s are Coming, “There is a house in New Orleans they call the rising sun.”

  34. 2 of scotlands best dj’s live radio arcade members gallery and more klubbeatz.org

  35. wow…. randomly searched my name and found this over a year later
